Knowledge Areas

A knowledge area is a grouping of processes that have characteristics and knowledge requirements in common. A knowledge area contains processes that focus on an aspect of the project, but belong to different project management process groups. For example: Plan Quality Management (defining the appropriate quality standards to be used on the project) is part of the Planning process group, Manage Quality (ensuring those quality standards and processes are followed) is part of the Executing process group, and Control Quality (checking that the deliverables meet the defined standards) is part of the Monitoring and Controlling process group.
